He's accompanied by a Ralts and a Kirlia this time, though. He's had them for a little while, but the expression on his face is more thoughtful than...well, pained.]

To those chaps raising psychic-type Pokemon, I have a bit of a question for you. Is it possible to teach them how to play things like chess or cards?

[Although, now he looks like he'd rather take something back.]

Actually, you know what? Never mind the cards. I'd really not have to deal with them having a gambling addiction or accusing the other of cheating via telepathy or whatever.

I'm also curious to know something. What's the significance of being 16? I've heard that it's something of a special occasion by a friend, but I can't say I follow the reasoning behind a "sweet sixteen."

Turning sixteen is really just another milestone in your life. You are midway through your teens, and there are only four years left until you are expected to truly be an adult. Capable of standing on your own, so to speak. The "sweet sixteen" is about making the year the best one, because in the next two years, you are expected to start behaving more like an adult.

I can't say I know what a car or a drivers license is, so it must be something only in your world. Mhm! It's typically a party friends throw for each other, since it's that sort of special. [EXCEPT ALL HER FRIENDS WERE GOOONE She's helped throw her fair share for some of the younger kids still in Lhant.]

Psychics would probably be shit at cards or chess anyway. They'd read your mind!

Not if you tell them that's against the rules! But if you pitted two psychics against one another, wouldn't they have to rely on skill alone?

With time, I don't see why not. My Xatu is learning to read, and my Munna enjoys simple games like tic-tac-toe, but we haven't tried anything like chess yet.

I might have to start with checkers before moving on to chess, though.

I would not doubt a Pokebeast's ability to successfully engage in such foolishness, though I would not underestimate the potential for underhandedness by a psychic in such endeavors.

...and I am not aware of any particular significance attached to the age of sixteen, other than a point at which old age is rather rapidly approaching. ...Admittedly perhaps less so for humans.

Oh, right. You lived on the island like Jade did, didn't you? Aside from being the exact middle of your teen years, it's also when you can learn to drive. If there's something else to it that makes it more significant beyond that, I am not sure what it is. Eighteen is kind of a bigger deal than sixteen.

Is that how old you are then?

Well, essentially yes, but there are a couple distinct differences between our islands. [Question mark?] I guess I don't see the big deal about it considering I don't exactly need a vehicle to get around. 18 is the start of adulthood, isn't it?

Psychic Pokémon are smart; they might not even need teaching to pick up on card games.

But I wouldn't recommend playing against them. Even if they don't cheat, they're usually smarter than humans anyway.

That's probably true. I only know the rules of a few card games, though, even if I haven't actually played them. There's only so much you can play with one other person.

I guess it depends on where you come from. Like I don't remember anything special about turning sixteen back home, but there's ceremonies and festivals and stuff for other milestones. There's Shichi-Go-San for kids, the Coming of Age day for people who just turned twenty... and some others, too, though not all of them are practiced nowadays.

Sorry, I didn't mean to ramble on like that. Anyway, I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's all a part of growing up, and getting one step closer to being an actual adult. Maybe that's what they're celebrating when somebody turns sixteen.
