CHARACTER
CHARACTER NAME: Jake English
SERIES: MS Paint Adventures: Homestuck
CANON POINT: After getting knocked out (again) at his house
LOSS: His ability to love/enjoy movies. Basically, he's described in canon to adore all movies. Literally all of them. They past the time, and they inspired his crazy adventure shenanigans. Without it, he'll likely have to turn to adventure novels and comics, since movies will probably bore or annoy him here.
ABOUT THE CHARACTER: Jake is mostly cheerful and outgoing. He loves to explore, ruins especially, and having various adventures is what life is all about to him. He seems to always be in a rush, more so when he's excited about something. Then again, it might also be because he procrastinates a bit, such as with the rabbit project that needs to get to Jade and John in their Beta Universe. When the day to finally send the blasted thing comes, he finds that he doesn't have enough uranium to send it, and even asks his mysterious alien friend if he can put it off a bit longer (which he can't).
Let's talk about his relationship with his friends for a little bit. He dearly loves and trusts his friends, appreciating that he has good ones to support him and keep him grounded. Jake's trust in them might seem naive to an outsider, but he has never had any reason to suspect them of falsehood when it's time to get into a serious discussion. For example, he believes Dirk when he tells Jake about what happens in four centuries because that's the time Dirk is living in. Jake says that he has no reason to not believe Dirk, who is his best friend.
He actually knows his friends almost scarily well. According to one such panel, he knows them so well that his subconscious can make almost exact recreations of them in his Dream Bubble. It's seen only with Dirk, but it's not a far stretch to assume that he knows Roxy and Jane just as well.
Now, he does, of course, have his flaws. Consciously, Jake is horrendously oblivious. As an example, when Jane denies she has romantic inclinations to him and starts beating herself up over saying something like that, he takes it all at face-value and assumes that she really doesn't have any feelings like that to him. It's obvious to the audience by her text that this is not the case, especially when she starts typing words in all caps, but Jake is simply oblivious to it. His subconscious knows that she's upset and why, but consciously it's like he refuses to admit it. One could speculate that he doesn't know how to handle a situation like that, and chooses ignorance over any other action in an attempt to not make the situation worse. Jake cares a lot about his friends, and the last thing he wants is to hurt them.
It's also possible that he's shy, a remark that Dave made when Jake first meets the troll group in a Dream Bubble. To be fair, Dave may have a point. Jake most likely isn't used to dealing with more than one person at a time, since he has grown up on an island all by himself for most of his life. He is more than talkative when it was just him and Mind Dirk or him and Aranea. Throughout the entire discussion and general craziness of this meeting, he's unusually silent, except to hush up the Mind Dirk.
He has a bit of a nasty habit of not looking before leaping. The best example of this is when he tries to beat the crap out of Meenah, thinking that she is the younger version of the Condesce, who wipes out almost all of human society (the only humans alive being Dirk and Roxy). Mind Dirk even tells him that this isn't the case and that Meenah is basically from a pre-Scratch universe. Does Jake listen? No, but that gives his subconscious an excuse to be all "I told you so" at him.
Jake is mostly like everyone else, though. He's almost literally an open book with his emotions. He gets frustrated, perhaps more so with Dirk's elusiveness; he gets sad; he gets angry. Just like everyone else in the world. It's just that most people can see these emotions either in his text or just by his expressions. Jake doesn't hide anything like certain Striders, at least as far as the audience is aware of. For all intents and purposes, he's a likable dork who appears to be able to make friends pretty easily. His word usage is a little odd (the absolute best example is this directly from the comic: Nor am i a quaint man of the past. Pardon me but do i SOUND like some trollycar bellwether toiling in the heart of the mustache belt from the ruff n tumble year of nineteen aught nine???), but it seems to be endearing to his friends. He makes mistakes just like everyone else, though whether he learns from them or not is up to him.
Now, after all of that, there's still a bit more to talk about! It's been mentioned already that he has grown up almost all by himself on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean somewhere. Well, he used to live with his Grandma, until she was murdered by the Condesce early in his life. Jake doesn't really know much about who she is as a person because she died too early for him to have a chance. After making contact with Jade and learning about Sburb's possibilities of allowing him to get to know his grandmother in her youth, he jumps at the chance. For him, it's not just about adventures in a different universe, it's mostly about finally bonding with his Grandma, or some version of her. He doesn't seem to remember much about his grandmother, but he certainly remembers having to burn her body so that the monsters on the island wouldn't eat her. Jake has experienced death and loss firsthand at a young age, and it's hard to tell what this might have done to his psyche.
Living alone on an island that tries to kill you can certainly be "adventurous." However, it's also stiflingly lonely. Due to this, it can be speculated that Jake will have a very difficult time in letting go of his friends because they're literally his only form of human contact. Dirk has made a mention of this when he sent over Brobot as a 13th birthday present for Jake. Interestingly, Jake sidesteps the concern his friend expresses and changes the subject. It's very highly possible that Dirk struck close to home with his statement, but he either doesn't want to admit it, refuses to talk about it, or both. It may well be a thought that bothers Jake as well and doesn't like dwelling on it. Regardless, he doesn't want to do anything that may endanger his friendship with them. They're far too important in his life, and perhaps a way to keep him sane.
ABILITIES: Jake is a Page of Hope, which has not yet been defined as far as supernatural powers goes. However, he is a practiced gunman, using dual pistols as his weapon of choice. It has been implied that Jake knows a lot about machinery, too, as he is able to put Brobot's head on with relative ease, and most likely repairs him if needed as well. He also made the rabbit that would go on to help the Beta kids in their Scratch plan by giving them the weapons they needed. His Grandma was also a skilled inventor, so it is also likely that she taught him how to handle machinery.
THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE:
Jake groaned as he laid there on the ground, head throbbing in time with his heartbeat. Holy Mother of God, how the heck did he survive that fall? That Skulltop must be made of stronger stuff than he realized! Regardless, at least the pain meant that he was alive, and not completely dead. Jake wasn't in a terrible hurry to see where one went when both Dream and waking self were dead.
When the pain subsided enough, he slowly sat up and refrained with every ounce of will to not shake his head. Suddenly, he knew exactly how action heroes felt whenever they had fallen from an impossible height and lived. Jake took off his glasses, inspecting them carefully for any damage. It looked like they survived the fall, too, with some minor scratches on the frames. The lenses needed some cleaning, though.
Glasses returned to their rightful place (with clean lenses to boot), Jake stood up and looked around. He made a slow circle in place to get a good idea of where he was. It looked like he was in a castle of some sort, and that was definitely not part of his island. This wasn't his Land, was it? He frowned. No, that wouldn't have made any sense since he hadn't done anything to get to his Land. So….
A Dream Bubble, perhaps?
Wow, it was hard to think when one had a splitting headache. Jake gingerly rubbed the back of his head, wincing when his fingers came into contact with a sizable lump. Taking another glance around, he decided to go find a place to lie down or maybe find some sort of clinic to get something for his head. The whole landing on his noggin nonsense was starting to get ridiculous, but at least he wasn't pressed for time by an erupting volcano.
FIRST-PERSON JOURNAL SAMPLE:
Jiminy *christmas* that hurt! Jeez at least the dragon didnt decide to go ahead and eat me.
Rotten luck for that mecha rabbit however. How on earth am i going to explain that to…
Uh…
Oh cripes that last hit to the noggin must have done more damage than i thought!
Dag nab it. Im pretty sure that was really important!
*sigh*
Well no use crying over spilt milk.
If anybody finds a robotic rabbit would you please send the rascal my way?
Oh and maybe tell me where on heaven and earth i am?
I couldve sworn i had fallen straight into my house on the island…
INTENT: Jake is just this huge, lovable dork who acts way before he thinks. He's always full of hope and promise, and it's endearing to me. I want to see how Jake can grow as a person in this type of setting, to learn that not everything is what it seems, and that loss isn't the end of the world.
