[So, Jake left the inn at about ten in the morning. He told the others that he'd probably be back at about two in the afternoon. Christmas shopping is pretty easy in Goldenrod, after all, and he needed to grab a couple of evolutionary stones.

Jake's about four hours late. This opens up in the middle of a rant.]

I'm not lost, just turned all around by the absurdity of this city's layout!

You shouldn't blame the city for your own shortcomings, especially since you said the exact same thing three hours ago.

[The teen sighs in frustration.]

Tate, why can't you be more helpful about it and ask Susan for directions? She's back at the inn and out of the ball, for pity's sake! And she's far better at this stuff than the two of us put together!

The two of us are not on speaking terms. Also, I have already taken the liberty of recording this conversation via the Pokegear.

[Blank stare. And then--]

WHAT?! Gimme that thing, you--!

[Tate chuckles before the feed cuts out.]

The last time this happened, it took those two about a week to reconcile with each other. And that was back when Tate was a Kirlia!

So, do you want me or Jane or someone else to come pick you up? [ Because letting you wander around for four more hours sounds ridiculous, just so you know. ]

I'm not sure I would call it a true red-black flip, but they do seem to have disagreements every so often.

A what flip? The only flipping I've been seeing has been Tate flipping the chessboard in a fit of sore loser rage.

Quadrants are how troll romance works. There are four of them - thus the name! Pale, flushed, ashen, and calignious.

Have you attempted the frequency of the Pokebeast's training schedule? It may not be one-hundred percent effective, but it does seem to aid in dulling their, ah, more capricious instincts.

No, I haven't. That's pretty good advice, though! I'll have to try that out. Maybe Tate will grow out of his sore loser ways.

That makes sense. What exactly does pale, flushed, et cetera mean?

Pale and flushed romances are red romances; they're the pity-oriented quadrants! Palemates are called moirails. You know that trolls are a generally violent species, right? Moirails are...well, dangerous trolls are sort of naturally attracted to a more even-tempered troll, who pacifies and balances them out, although the other troll also pacifies and balances out...it's...just someone there, looking out for you. I think the "sibling" thing you humans do is sort of the closest, although it's romantic and dating still?

The flushed quadrant is referred to as a matesprit. That one is basically the quadrant you humans have, as near as I can tell.

Ashen is another conciliatory relationship. It requires three partners; it's basically when two other trolls are getting dangerously close to kismesitude which might be infidelity or might ruin other relationships, so you auspistice between them.

Calignious is for kismesis. That's...well, when you really, really hate someone in a romantic sense?
